Reimagining games and sports

In our second Masterclass for 2022, we look at reimagining the way we classify and teach games and sports with Justen O’Connor, Laura Alfrey and Dawn Penney.

Our syllabus has focused on four key game categories for teaching for over a decade.  However, physical activity participation is changing and researchers question whether the approach needs to be rethought.

Classifying games as invasion, striking and fielding, target and net/court allows us to focus on a core set of concepts and strategies that can be transferred between different games in the same category.

With changing patterns of sports participation, this new research proposes establishing a classification system that is inclusive of a wider range of games and sports. The additional categories proposed are:

• lap or circuit sports,
• route or journey sports
• rush or action sports
• stunts or tricking sports
• rhythmic or aesthetic sports.

Justen, Laura and Dawn will unpack these categories and explore how this new thinking can translate in your PDHPE program.

Justen O’Connor is Associate Professor at Monash University and has research experience that utilises systems thinking, social ecology and strengths-based approaches to explore curriculum and pedagogy associated with health, physical education, sport and lifetime physical activity.

Laura Alfrey is currently Course Leader for the Bachelor of Education (Health and Physical Education) at Monash University. Laura’s research focuses on Health and Physical education (HPE), sport, active recreation and physical activity contexts, and the ways policy, professional learning and practice contribute to inclusive and educative experiences.

Dawn Penney is Research Professor in the School of Education at Edith Cowan University, Australia, and an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Education, Monash University. She is recognised internationally for her work in policy and curriculum development in Health and Physical Education.
