Record of Changes – NESA update to CI requirements

A significant amendment has been made to the assessment requirements of the collaborative investigation.

Initially, the syllabus (page 22) stated that:

Content

“Outcome HM-11-05 must be assessed (emphasis added). Other outcomes are selected based on the group’s investigation topic.”

Requirements for the Collaborative Investigation

“The Collaborative Investigation must:

  • Link the group research question to a concept taught in Health for Individual and Communities or The Body and Mind in Motion in Year 11
  • Address (emphasis added) knowledge, understanding and skill outcomes in the investigation, including HM-11-05”

Whereas now, according to the record of changes, last updated on 8 May, 2025, the requirements now state:

As teachers navigate what the change in language (from assessed to addressed) means for their collaborative investigations, we encourage teachers to do two things:

  1. Ask NESA if you have any questions or require clarification on what this change looks like in your school context.
  2. Most importantly, keep in mind the purpose behind the inclusion of the collaborative investigation. It offers a powerful opportunity to intentionally foster the essential capabilities our young people need to thrive in an increasingly dynamic and AI-influenced world. In this context, the demand for human-centred skills, such as problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and self-management has never been greater. These so-called ‘soft skills’ are, in fact, foundational, equipping students to stand out, adapt, and lead with confidence beyond the classroom.
