Teaching the Independent Research project in CAFS

Learn how to work smarter, not harder, when it comes to the CAFS Independent Research Project (IRP).

Join accomplished CAFS teachers as they share their knowledge and experiences of teaching the IRP.

This 3-part webinar series will showcase different ways to teach IRP which you can adapt to suit your context. Learn new ideas around content, IRP facilitation and assessment.  Each webinar includes a 75 min presentation and 15 min Q&A session.

Webinar 1: Essential IRP planning considerations
Date: Tuesday 8th August
Time: 3.45 – 5.15pm
What do you need to consider when planning how to run the IRP? This webinar will cover:

  • IRP facilitation – shifting from student-driven to teacher-facilitated models
  • Modeling IRP – Teacher facilitated – Whole class doing one research question together
  • Research Methodology Content – Research Fundamentals

Jessica Gavric

Presenter: Jessica Gavric, PDHPE teacher, Narrabeen Sports High
Jess has been teaching secondary PDHPE for 13 years, with a wide range of experience leading curriculum, faculty, wellbeing and sport. She is a passionate mentor for pre-service and early career teachers, committed to nurturing sense of purpose, connection, teacher wellbeing and effective teacher organisation and practice.

 

Webinar 2: Influence of school context on IRP
Date: Tuesday 22nd August
Time: 3.45 – 5.15pm
How does knowing your school context influence when and how you run your IRP? This webinar will cover:

  • Essential considerations for teaching and assessing the Research Methodology Module
  • Modeling IRP – Teacher facilitated – Groups with varying questions based on the same syllabus dot point
  •  Research Methodology Content – Research Methods with a focus on the Literature Review

Presenter: Kellie Kells, Acting Leader of Curriculum Years 5- 12, St Francis Catholic College
Kellie has 15 years of PDHPE teaching experience including K-12, Child Studies and Dance, and Stage 6 CAFS and Exploring Early Childhood. Previous extensive Pastoral Care experience as a Year Coordinator and College Wellbeing Coordinator has contributed to her understanding of effective holistic education to meet the diverse learning needs of all students.

 

Webinar 3: Deciding IRP questions
Date: Tuesday 5th September
Time: 3.45 – 5.15pm
What is the process for deciding the question(s) for the IRP? This webinar will cover:

  • Essential considerations for choosing IRP research questions
  • Modeling IRP – teacher facilitated – Groups with different questions based on one of the two HSC core modules or option module
  • Research Methodology Content – Research Process

Shannon Cooper

Presenter: Shannon Cooper, PDHPE and Social Science Teacher, Cranbrook School
Shannon is a dedicated teacher who has been teaching Stage 6 CAFS and PDHPE for 12 years. She also has experience in wellbeing as a Year Advisor and a Sports coordinator. Shannon’s teaching approach is centred on making learning enjoyable and finding relevance in the content being taught, enabling students to connect, and become lifelong learners.

ACCREDITATION
Completing the Teaching the IRP in CAFS workshop will contribute 4.5 hours of NESA elective PD in the priority area of delivery and assessment of NSW curriculum – addressing standard descriptors 3.1.2, 5.1.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
