Mixed-ability grouped PE: pros and cons
Dr Shaun Wilkinson and Professor Dawn Penney from Edith Cowan University explore mixed-ability class groupings in physical education (PE).
While there is extensive international literature on different forms of ability grouping in physical education, particularly streaming by competency, mixed-ability classes has attracted comparatively little research attention.
Shaun and Dawn’s research looks specifically at the complexities and potential inequities that can result in mixed-ability groupings in PE classes.
Their presentation will provide a rich insight into students’ experiences of mixed-ability grouping in PE and explore ways in which these experiences are influenced by the teacher and students’ beliefs about ability, gender and the wider policy context.
PRESENTERS
Shaun Wilkinson works in the Department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation, Northumbria University, UK. Shaun’s research focuses on ability groupings in physical education and policy translation in schools.
Dawn Penney is Research Professor in the School of Education at Edith Cowan University, Australia, and an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Education, Monash University. She is recognised internationally for her work in policy and curriculum development in Health and Physical Education.
