Teaching alcohol and drug-use prevention

Dr Lauren Gardener and Dr Emma Devine explore evidence-based practices for teaching of alcohol and drug prevention in schools.

They’ll showcase their research work and explore:

• Positive Choices – an online portal to help Australian schools and communities access accurate, up-to-date evidence-based alcohol and other drug education resources.
• OurFutures – a curriculum-aligned program that takes a harm minimisation approach and is based on a comprehensive social influence and skill development model. OurFutures is the only Australian school-based program to receive the highest evidence rating from the National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction.

PRESENTERS

Lauren Gardner is a Research Fellow at the University of Sydney’s Matilda Centre. She holds a Bachelor of Psychology with first class Honours and a PhD in Psychology. Her program of research focuses on developing, evaluating and taking to scale preventive eHealth interventions for secondary school students. She is currently leading the OurFutures project and coordinates the Health4Life Initiative.

Emma Devine is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use at the University of Sydney. She holds a Bachelor of Psychology and a Masters of Psychological Science from University College Dublin, and a PhD in Psychology from the Institute for Positive Psychology and Education at Australian Catholic University. Her research focuses on substance use prevention, mental health, and prenatal alcohol exposure. Emma is the Project Manager for Positive Choices and the Learning with FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) initiatives.
