Masterclass #3 2022:
Planning engaging movement lessons
(rescheduled from June to October)
Research tells us that physical activity declines dramatically during late childhood and continues into adolescence (AHKA, 2022, p12). Researchers have looked extensively at the role motivation plays in choices related to physical activity.
Emily McLachlan continues the discussion on ways to increase the motivation and engagement of students in movement lessons through the lens of Self Determination Theory.
With a focus on PE, Emily introduces the concept of variety as being an additional requirement to support the basic psychological needs of students to support autonomous motivation to engage in PE. She will discuss the importance of striking the right balance between:
- satisfying the need for autonomy by providing choice and variety in lessons, versus
- allowing students time to gain competence and confidence in their ability.
Join us to explore how building in a variety of lesson tasks and activating student choice can increase student motivation and participation.
